Junk Journalism: The “Assad” E-mails

Guardian skewers own credibility with hamfisted Wikileaks knock-off aimed at Syria.
editorial by Tony Cartalucci and reprinted here with kind permission

Update: Apparently, the Guardian claims, Syrian President Assad’s father-in-law suggested the president read an article from Land Destroyer titled, “British Propaganda Aims at Triggering Syrian Genocide.” The Guardian has still failed categorically to confirm the veracity of their latest, incredibly irresponsible propaganda stunt aimed not at truth, but at further destabilizing Syria and compounding the tragic loss of life the West has purposefully triggered.

“It is impossible to rule out the possibility of fakes in the email cache, but…” “The Assad E-Mails,” London Guardian, March 14, 2012.

This sentence right here should have immediately halted the publication of anything revolving around an alleged cache of e-mails provided to the Guardian by the obviously compromised “Syrian opposition.” The source is clearly biased, politically motivated, and their information unconfirmed. Yet the Guardian decided to run with the story anyway, casting doubt on their own objectivity, journalistic integrity, and their true motivation, which now is clearly not “journalism.”

The Guardian, in their explanation as to why they decided to publish unconfirmed information included the following statement, “we believe the more detailed picture of the workings of Assad’s inner circle that emerges from the mails, and the extent to which he and his wife have managed to sustain their luxurious lifestyle, are also of public interest.” A “more detailed picture” that is in fact unverified and most likely a politically motivated fabrication is indeed of “public interest” if you are trying to sell a particular narrative regardless of the actual facts.

The job of a journalist is to report the facts impartially to help inform the public and enable them to make accurate decisions in regards to a vast array of issues that affect their daily lives as well as the collective well-being of their communities and nations. A journalist is not to irresponsibly publish anything that comes across their desk, applying sensational headlines while making incredible innuendos only to post disclaimers halfway down the page that the information they are attempting to foist upon the public as fact and “truth,” “may not be verified or true.”

That is propaganda, deceit, manipulation, and above all, fraud. Of course, in the Guardian’s quest to “verify” these alleged e-mails, they contact other propagandists within the same circle of corporate-media outfits, including ABC News (whose Barber Walters’ interview with Assad was a humiliating disgraceful display of how far America’s journalistic establishment has sunk.) Another source contacted to “confirm” whether or not at least some of the e-mails were genuine was former British Ambassador to Syria “Sir” Andrew Green, whose former employer, the British Foreign Ministry, is a viciously adamant opponent of Assad’s government working directly with Syrian opposition harbored in London, with members of the notorious Syrian Observatory for Human Rights literally passing in and out of Foreign Secretary William Hague’s office.

So in the Guardian’s quest to verify what they claim “would be difficult for even the best resourced hoaxer or intelligence agency to gather or fabricate,” they contact two vast organizations who just so happen to possess not only the capacity to fabricate such lies, but the motive and a demonstrative history of working actively against the Syrian government to undermine and ultimately oust it from power.

Both the Western corporate-media and the British Foreign Ministry are more than capable of using their official contacts with Bashar Al-Assad to bolster otherwise fabricated e-mails, as well as hand over the “cache” to activists they work with on a daily basis. In fact, it is most likely during these daily meetings that Syrian activists helped refine the cache’s fabricated contents to ensure a credible narrative was produced to match what the Syrian public already knows about the Assad family.

Wikileaks performed a similar function during the onset of the Tunisian and Egyptian “Arab Spring” unrest. Now fully confirmed to be a US-engineered geopolitical destabilization planned years in advance, it is clear that Wikileaks is a creation and tool of the US State Department, leveraged by the corporate establishment-media with whom “anti-establishment” Julian Assange works so closely with, to help augment, not hinder the agenda of Wall Street and London. The impact of Wikileaks has been severely diminished by deceitful “journalists” and corporate lobbyists who have been exposed using the less than reputable word of the US State Department and its ambassadors to sell the US State Department’s very own agenda to the public.

The Syrian opposition itself, has been mired from the very beginning in one scandal after another, as their attempts to manipulate the perception of the world in tandem with their foreign sponsors is exposed repeatedly, beginning with “Gay Girl in Damascus” who turned out to be a 40 year old American man living in the UK, to “Syrian Danny” who was recently caught staging fake gunfire off camera and getting into character before giving a hysterical casualty report to CNN’s Anderson Cooper. Cooper would go on to admit that Western coverage of events in Syria is entirely based on unverified, biased accounts provided solely by the Syrian opposition and exposed liars like “Danny.”

With cities being restored to order now in quick succession, and Russia and China steadfastly denying Wall Street and London another opportunity to repeat their craven atrocities committed in Libya, the stops are being pulled out and every imaginable gambit is being pursued, even rehashes of already worn-out gambits like Wikileaks-style e-mail caches.

Since the Guardian wants to play the game of speculation, we can in turn speculate about their latest reportage on “The Assad E-mails.” It appears that the Guardian is working in tandem with other members of the Western media and the British Foreign Ministry to undermine the Assad family and his support across Syria which has just recently manifested itself in nation-wide pro-Assad rallies, bitterly renounced by the media who is supposed to simply report the facts.

The Guardian, by doing so, has resigned its journalistic integrity while their staff members, including Robert Booth, Luke Harding, Angelique Chrisafis, and Matthew Taylor who signed off on this “junk journalism,” should never be considered, believed, trusted or labeled as anything but propagandists again. They have willfully violated the trust their credentials erroneously lend them and have further eroded Western journalism in what appears to be a process of irreparable decay.

Whether or not the e-mails are legitimate is not really even the issue – the issue is the untenable, unjournalistic process with which this alleged information was approached and handled. Would the Guardian give equal consideration to a cache of e-mails produced by the Assad government regarding Syrian opposition leaders actively collaborating with NATO, the US and British government as well as terrorists from Iraq and Libya?

Certainly not, especially when outright admissions by the opposition themselves are glossed over by Western propagandists. The Guardian has established they have an agenda, that is to undermine and remove Assad from power, with the truth being nothing more than another barrier to remove in the process. (Cartalucci)

I would like to thank Mr. Cartalucci for his kind permissions in this reprinting of his work, for the time and energy he puts forth to combat media disinformation, and keeping those of us who are desirous of the truth informed.

The Secret Government

This video aired on PBS in 1987 and is as good as anything on the tape (must see). Moyers is a very respected TV journalist who also worked for Lyndon B. Johnson and has a very professional approach. He interviews many different people involved with the CIA and other government agencies. His documentary gives quite an overview of what has actually happened in the last 50 years regarding the CIA and the cold war (including Iran, Guatemala, Cuba, Vietnam and Chile). He features such people as Ralph McGeehee and Phil Retinger (both former CIA agents), Rear Admiral Gene La Rocque (Ret. U.S.N.), Theodore Bissell (active in the CIA at the time), Sen. Frank Church and many others. Moyers is so very credible. The full video “The Secret Government” is 90 minutes seen here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJldun440Sk  – the segment shown above is edited by Frank Dorrel to 20 minutes.

This video is a must watch, as it gives us a much needed insight into ongoing government policy throughout recent history.

The Hypocrisy of the “War on Terror

America’s war on terror sounds wonderful to any ear, the words rest upon heart and ear as a cause based in necessity; but America is not fighting terrorists, the war on terror mere word play designed to garnish your support.  America is fighting a war, to be certain, but terrorists are being supplied and funded, not fought. This war is against sovereign nations with America using terrorist organizations’ as allies in attempts to remove the governments of sovereign nations, it is past time “we the people’ take note.

We see a definite pattern developing in wars and civil wars being assisted and/or engaged in by America and her allies. We have witnessed these wars globally in excess of 10 years which grants us the ability to see the reality of this war clearly in places such as Syria today. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a set of interviews she gave in Tunisia said;

“To whom are you delivering [the arms]?” Clinton asked. “We know al-Qaeda. Zawahiri is supporting the opposition in Syria. Are we supporting al-Qaeda in Syria?” (Badran)

Zawahiri in interviews reported by Press TV has admitted that al-Qaeda is inside Syrian borders and has joined with Syrian opposition forces in an effort to oust Al-Assad from power, and US intelligence reports are in agreement.  (Landay)

Syria has a secular government, and as such affords such things as religious freedom, something any American would agree is good, yet, Syrian opposition forces have categorically stated this will be the first thing removed from public policy when they obtain power;

“It is time to come back home and rule the Syrian Muslim people who live under the umbrella of the secular regime that supports and protects the principles of tolerance, and guarantees the freedom of thinking and embracing whatever belief the people choose. Such a freedom was the main reason that made the other non-Muslim sects of the Syrian people able to step forward and have a rank and a good contribution in the Syrian life, and also share the wealth with the Muslims on their own land. It is time for us to come back and force all the other non-Muslim sects to shrink and step back. These sects are the infidel Christians, the criminal Alawites and the infidel Druzes.” (The Truth about Syria)

The first question in anyone’s mind is why the American government is showing full support of this group, a party deemed terrorists to whom it is illegal under the Patriot Act to fund.

 It is unlawful for a person in the United States or subject to the jurisdiction of the United States to knowingly provide “material support or resources” to a designated FTO. (The term “material support or resources” is defined in 18 U.S.C. § 2339A(b) as “currency or monetary instruments or financial securities, financial services, lodging, training, expert advice or assistance, safehouses, false documentation or identification, communications equipment, facilities, weapons, lethal substances, explosives, personnel, transportation, and other physical assets, except medicine or religious materials.”)

The American government is breaking laws created by them, or at the very least turning the other cheek in encouraging other countries to fund them. The reasoning is seen in statements like this one by Senator John McCain;

“McCain, the ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said the goal of airstrikes should be to create safe havens in the country for opposition forces to plan their own political and military attacks against Assad. The benefit of the United States leading the military effort, he said, is that it would allow the U.S. to better empower Syrian groups that support U.S. interests to move toward a democratic transition. “If we stand on the sidelines, others will try to pick winners, and this will not always be to our liking or in our interest,” he said.” (John McCain Calls For U.S.-Led Airstrikes On Syria )

When a general amnesty given by the Syrian government to all protesters and an offer of talks aimed at resolving the conflict inside Syrian borders the US State Department advised the opposition group not to accept this amnesty and to continue the fight aimed at removing Al-Assad from power. (Sandels)

This is unequivocal proof that the American government is supporting terrorism with full knowledge, breaking US law with an end goal of putting into power leaders sympathetic to US interests. This is not happening/ has not happened to Syria alone, we have seen it recently in Tunis, Egypt and Libya as well. It is a pattern of terrorist support the peoples of the world can little afford. The principles of freedom, of democracy, and the rights of the peoples are not being taken into consideration. Sovereign nations are fighting a war against terror, a very real one, against a very real evil, right now. American priorities should be lying with governments who are fighting this war, and not with terrorists.

Americans have the ability to act, we can write or call our Senators and Congressmen and tell them citizens will not support any effort made by the American government to aid terrorists. In no uncertain terms will the good citizens of this country support a war against a sovereign nation who is fighting terrorism on its own soil. It is time to speak out.

Fair and Balanced Journalism

Ben Bagdikian pointed out in his book “The New Media Monopoly” that media outlets in America are run by 5 conglomerates who control over 90% of all programming seen, heard or read. As a result biases tend to seep not only into the news we turn for facts, but also make appearances where we “get away.”  The first amendment protected freedom of speech and of the press that as a society we govern ourselves wisely.  This last great bastion of freedom is now being undermined, fair reporting little more than a dog and pony show, ideology sold as news is further reinforced in entertainment programming.

Speaking the truth or being critical of government policies subject’s journalists to dismissal and blacklisting. Just ask journalists such as Tim McCarthy who was fired for criticizing the government’s recklessness http://www.progressive.org/mag_mcreporter02 and he is not alone. While any company has a right to determine what they publish, we need to reassess our stance on contemporary journalism; there exists the necessity of multiple opinions from various viewpoints in order to determine what truth is. Our founding fathers knew of this necessity and created its provision; a provision of no value in today’s corporate world, and little enforced.

In order we find the unvarnished truth, we must look to other means for information, outside the 5 media conglomerates. The truth should be the aim of all citizens and through truth, we begin to build a more stable world that all of humanity can live. Let us build that world together, freeing ourselves of the bonds of slavery that ignorance brings. Through knowledge we make better choices for ourselves and our society. This is my reason for creating this blog and its aim. I hope you find informative my contribution to our world in upcoming articles. Welcome to my blog.
